This week we are continuing on with with helping to form perfect midline position and build our gymnastics strength. Monday we are using our gymnastic strict movements as our strength workout for the day.
Although sometimes strict movements don’t seem as fun as our faster conditioning pieces, these foundational strength movements are bread and butter for getting stronger not only in gymnastics but there is a huge transference into our barbell movements as well - regardless if you feel you "can't" do the workout please come to class as we can scale to achieve the desired stimulus.
As we have spoken about in the past developing strict strength before you go in to any kind of kipping will help prevent injury, long term or immediate. Think about the pull-up- if your shoulders cannot support your bodyweight when it is moving in a slow, controlled fashion, how is it meant to take the impact of nearly three times your bodyweight, produced by a fast, kipping movement? Strict movement not only develops the large muscles, they also develop those smaller, stabilising muscles, such as the muscles that act as your rotator cuff, and your rhomboids. Developing the strength of these muscles gives your shoulders much needed stability for the dynamic kip. Strict also gives you more time to focus on your positions and develop your motor control and coordination, which transfers seamlessly over to a more efficient kipping technique.
Friday we are taking away the barbell and going to be working on bench with Dumbbells this will help strengthen our non-dominant arm so we can create a little more symmetry through our upper body movements.
Please remember to sign into classes before coming into the gym - as this allows us to schedule coaches appropriately (i.e. More than 2 for larger groups), this is hard is people aren't signing in until 5 minutes before the session. Additionally as we grow classes only have a capacity of 18 people.
There are now bag racks at both Adelaide and Margaret - please put your bags on the shelves, it helps keep the gym de-cluttered and avoids trip hazards.
Thanks so much and see you throughout the week.
