That's two open workouts in the books for 2017. Dave Castro decided to double the dumbbells just as we decided to double the amount of fun we had.
RIP to everyone's hands after that one. There were a few of us that ended up with more blood and rips than we ever have had before which is a great sign that we put in a really good effort.
On the other side, sales of rxd repair balm have gone through the roof (please forgive me for my sneaky plug of the rxd repair balm but its good stuff).
For those that don't know me I'm a numbers guy. I love my statistics and data so I'll report on that every week. Here's how we went in 17.2:
There were 22 males who did this workout rx and of those, 14 got at least 1 bar muscle-up. This is an increase on the number of male athletes to get a bar muscle-up from 16.3 last year so that is a good sign for the gym.
There were 9 females who did this one rx and of those, 4 got at least 1 bar muscle-up. Once again this is an increase on the number of ladies that did a bar muscle-up in 16.3 last year so congratulations to those that have worked hard over the year to get them!
Overall, the data suggests that CrossFit 4000 performed better in 17.1 than we did on 17.2.
Here are the most impressive performances of 17.2 (in no order whatsoever, Brooke will call me lazy for not putting them in alphabetical order. Joel and I prefer the word "efficient"):
Rene Cunningham - 114 reps rx - "wait is that the lady with all the tattoos?" Yep that's her. There is no other way to describe Rene then she is like Parfait (everybody loves parfait ). She has many layers and once you get to know her you will realise she has one of the kindest hearts of anyone you will ever meet. She comes in early and trains most days for a good 2-3 hours. Without a doubt the most diligent trainer I've seen. She came out and smashed 17.2 and is currently sitting in 78th place in Australia for her age group (I think she's in Masters 50-54 but you'll have to double check with her). Very good reward for all your hard work Rene.
Jonathan Banh - 82 reps rx - in the 2016 open Jon couldn't do a toes to bar or a bar muscle-up. In 2017 he got a chance to have a crack at both of these movements in the same workout. When asked how he went, he responded, "I should be arrested for murder because I killed it." Apart from being one of the funniest people in the gym, Jon came out and proved on Friday night that hard work pays off. He got through both rounds of toes to bar and pumped out 4 bar muscle-ups which is a massive achievement considering where he was a year ago. Thanks for always being a pleasure to coach and keep bringing that positive attitude to every class Jon.
Michael Green - 115 reps rx - "The Green Machine" stepped up in 17.2 and took out 3rd place overall for crossfit 4000 (thanks to his cheeky tiebreak time). He's a guy that has come along way in the last 12 months and deserved every reward he got out of this workout. Puts in the hard work day after day and is always very humble about his achievements (I wish I saw him do "Megan" in 3:45 #worldrecord #doubleundersofasticantseetherope #ineedshorterhashtags). Awesome work Greeny, there's nothing better as a coach to see hard work rewarded and that's exactly what happened for you on Friday night.
Darryn Fletcher - 83 reps rx - I like to call Darryn the tradesman, he just keep chipping away day in and day out. Always gives his best shot and always turns up to class with a great attitude. He had never done a bar muscle-up before and decided to have a crack at 17.2 rx anyway. He got to the bar and managed to get his first ever bar muscle-up which is a massive achievement and no better time to do it than in an open workout. He then went on to get 4 more to give him a score of 83. Turns out he got a bit over zealous and was practising more bar muscle-ups on Tuesday lunch class until he ripped half his hand off. Love your efforts Darryn and looking forward to watching you put in for another year.
I hope everyone is looking forward to 17.3 as much as I am. My prediction is some heavy barbells (potentially some squat snatches or overhead squats).
If your hands are still busted from 17.2 please see one of the coaches we will be able to point you in the right direction. Otherwise I hope we all rest up and are ready to crush (Joel's favourite word) whatever Dave Castro has in store for us in 17.3.
I'm busy working on my blog posts. Watch this space!
